We sell Cadillacs and used cars. This was a deal on a used M5. The guy lowballed us, and I’ve spent weeks working him up from his original offer. I had him on the cusp of getting to where we needed him, and this guy was given the lead and told to close the guy at the guys highest offer so far.

Yeah, dude should have declined and said that the sale was yours, but the bigger WTF is why he was “given the lead” from someone who is above both of you. My ire would be with your GSM. Why did that person make that decision? Did he think you couldn't close it? If he thought that, you need to ask why and have a conversation with him about wtf is going on.

My problem is like this is people’s lives. We don’t get paid by the hour. Giving this guy away was literally like giving part of my paycheck, for the work of already done, to another salesperson.

I work in a environment that has some crazy combos of commission and salary or hourly, or a vs system, where you cannot drop below hourly, depending on your position or agreed compensation agreement. I have found that this does not stop some from still scheming for that extra dough in perhaps questionable manners. Emphasis on “perhaps” and “some,” in case another oppo/CL poster is a coworker :)
